Cane corso pups come from a long line of dogs meant to work as guardians and hunters, Briggs explained. Their lineage begins in Italy, where they learned to be loyal and protective of their families — a job they still take to heart.
“Because they’re working dogs who thrive on having a job to do, lots of mental stimulation will help lead to a healthy life,” Briggs said.
The cane corso is a devoted dog that loves to be given tasks and will take their job seriously — especially when that job is playing fetch. They’re an intelligent and slightly independent breed of dog.
Along with a strong work ethic and protective nature comes a bold personality and an innate prey drive. While true for any dog breed, early socialization and training are especially key to promoting a happy home with a cane corso living with other pets or children.
The average size of an adult cane corso is between 90 and 110 pounds. They have a muscular build and require a fair amount of exercise. Other notable physical features include a wide chest and a wrinkled forehead.
You’ll find cane corso dogs sporting a few different coat colors, including black, gray, fawn (a yellowish-tan), red or brindle (brown with patterns of dark brown to black).

The cane corso dog breed has a thick two-layered coat that does shed year-round. It’s easy to groom, Briggs said, and requires little maintenance.
